Everton stopped Chelsea scoring at Stamford Bridge for the first time this season after they held them to a 0-0 draw in their Premier League encounter on Sunday.
From defence to attack, overall, it was a great team display on the day from Marco Silva’s men with the likes of Lucas Digne and Yerry Mina doing a brilliant job in naturalising the London club’s forwards.
That being said, there is one player who impressed in particular and that was Andre Gomes, who was so effective in the middle of the park.
£13.5m-rated (via Transfermarkt) Gomes arrived on loan from Barcelona over the summer, but has barely featured due to injury. However, it was hard not only to notice that but also the fact that he has only been at Everton for a few months.
The Portuguese playmaker was almost always on the same wavelength as his team-mates, constantly managing to pick them out even amid Chelsea’s high press.
On the ball, he always looked composed, which transferred to his ability to retain possession under immense pressure.
Considering what he has in his locker, it would have been great to see him play longer and more penetrating passes during the game. But given Chelsea’s domination, opportunities to do such were always going to be limited.
Nevertheless, it was still some display from Gomes looking at the context of things.
Making the Portugal international’s loan move a permanent one must be one of Everton’s priorities in the near future.
