Mikel Arteta's side did much more with their possession in the second half, but they fell further behind when former Gunner Konstantinos Mavropanos climbed highest to head home from a corner.
Arsenal huffed and puffed for the remainder of the contest, but when Gabriel Jesus wasted two headed chances in the space of three minutes, it felt like it just wasn't going to be their night.
David Raya spared further embarrassment by saving a late Said Benrahma penalty, but Arsenal were left frustrated by a defensive masterclass.

Mixed bag. Slow to react and attempt to block Soucek's goal and beaten in the air by Mavropanos. Good on the ball and made a few good clearances.

Did little when tucking into midfield and made a couple of poor tackles when asked to defend.

Yet another supremely composed performance at the heart of the team. Arsenal's best player, though the injury-time penalty he conceded took the shine off his evening.

Started the game with his usual understated style but became a little sloppy on the ball in the second half. Still created a few chances, but not at his extraordinary best.
